International Women in Engineering Day - Q&A with Heather Wolfenden

In support of International Women in Engineering Day, we asked ADCAS member Heather Wolfenden for her views on the industry.

Heather Wolfenden – Marketing Manager, Lindab Ltd.

  • Why did you decide to get involved in the industry?

I’ve always had a curious mind and an interest in how things work. I studied architectural engineering and business at university. These combined well to a career in Marketing for companies in the construction industry.

  • What advice would you offer to women and girls interested in becoming engineers?

There are a wide range of roles available within engineering companies and the construction industry. Anyone passionate about engineering will find a role to suit their skillset. If you have the right skillset for a role, you shouldn’t let traditional gender norms hold you back.

  • Why is it important that more women take up engineering-based roles?

There’s no reason why a woman shouldn’t aim for an engineering-based role. Having a more diverse workforce would benefit the industry. Ensuring female perspectives are included will feed innovation and development.

  • What would you say has been the most rewarding experience in your career?

I’ve been lucky enough to work for companies and individuals that have encouraged and supported me in ways that have allowed me to learn and grow. The most rewarding experience has been able to work with them and now, be in a position where I can support new people in the industry and see them develop.

  • What changes would you like to see happen to encourage more women to get involved in the industry?

It can seem daunting to enter a traditionally male-oriented industry, so it is important that we allow young people to see representation of women succeeding in the industry. We also need to challenge unconscious gender bias and ensure women feel safe and valued in all workplaces.
